About Yoyos
Yoyos, also known as Yo-Yo's, is a powerful reef break located on the west coast of Sumbawa, within the Sekongkang region. It's one of the most consistent spots and one of the most visited by surfers who come in search of intense barrels, solid walls, and zero crowds. The main wave is a right that breaks over reef and offers hollow, fast, and maneuverable sections. It works on various tides and is one of the most reliable in the area, with epic sessions from first light until sunset.
Local knowledge
Shallow, sharp coral reef is the main danger here β the right peels and barrels over a live reef shelf that gets very shallow on the inside, so a fall on the end section can mean reef cuts or worse on a low tide. There's a noticeable current that runs along the reef and can drag you down the line, and the take-off zone is exposed, so it carries real power on bigger swells. Sea urchins and the odd dry-reef boulder near the entry round out the hazards; bring reef boots and a basic cut kit.
Yoyos sits in the Sekongkang area of west Sumbawa, reached by road down to the coast where there are a couple of basic warungs and simple losmen near the point. Park up top, walk down the track to the beach/reef shelf, then time your entry off the rocks or reef ledge β jump out with the rip on the rising swell and use the channel on the shoulder rather than trying to paddle straight back through the impact zone. On bigger days, plan your exit before you're tired; the inside reef is unforgiving when you're cooked.
A clean performance shortboard works on the smaller, fun-size days, but step up to a 6'4"β6'8" round or pin tail once it gets overhead so you've got the paddle power and hold for the steep, fast take-off and barrel sections. On a solid swell bring something with a touch more length and rocker to handle the drop and avoid getting bogged on the wall.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide βSumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
βοΈGetting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5β2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1β2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
π΅Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
π€οΈClimate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
