About Lakey Peak
Lakey Peak, located in the Dompu region of East Sumbawa, is one of the most famous waves in Indonesia and one of the few spots in the world where you can surf a perfectly shaped left and right from the same peak. This wave breaks consistently during the dry season and has an active surf community, both local and international. The town of Lakey Beach has developed around surfing, with accommodations, warungs, surf schools, and photographers ready to capture every barrel. It's ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a solid base with multiple walkable peaks.
Local knowledge
The Peak breaks over a shallow, sharp coral reef that gets very thin on lower tides, especially on the right (Lakey Pipe is famously a heavy, dredgy barrel), so reef cuts, fin dings and broken boards are common. Strong current pulls along the reef and into the channel between peaks, and sea urchins lurk in the shallows where you enter; the lineup gets crowded with both visiting and local surfers when it's on, so collisions are a real risk. Stay aware on bigger swells when the takeoff zone shifts and the reef draws dry.
Lakey Peak is right out front of the village of Lakey Beach (Hu'u, Dompu) β most surfers stay at the losmen and warungs lining the beach and just walk out from their accommodation. Time your entry around the tide: paddle out through the channel between the left and right rather than straight over the reef, and watch your footing on the urchin-covered coral at low water. The wave is a comfortable paddle from the sand, no boat needed.
On a clean head-high day a sharp performance shortboard works well for the punchy A-frame takeoff. When it jumps up and Lakey Pipe starts throwing, bring a step-up (6'4"β6'8") with a bit more drive and pull-in capability to handle the fast, hollow sections and the reef beneath.
moderate β be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide βSumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
βοΈGetting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5β2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1β2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
π΅Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
π€οΈClimate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
