About HT’s (Hollow Trees / Lance’s Right)
HT's, the nickname for Hollow Trees, is a tubular, perfect right located on the southwest coast of the island of Sipora, in the Mentawai. Its original name comes from the hollow tree that once stood next to the reef, and although it's no longer there, the name has stuck. This wave breaks over a very defined and sharp reef, producing a critical take-off followed by a deep, clean barrel that forms like a machine. It's ideal for experienced surfers and barrel photographers, as it rarely disappoints when there's size.
Local knowledge
The reef here is shallow, sharp and very live — the inside section over the "Surgeon's Table" is notorious for slicing surfers up, so expect coral cuts and bring a good first-aid kit. The take-off is critical and unforgiving; getting caught inside or going over the falls on a set means a beating onto dry-ish reef. With pumping conditions the lineup gets crowded with charter-boat traffic and experienced barrel hunters, so dropping in and the resulting collisions are a real risk.
Access is boat-only via charter or one of the surf camps/resorts at HT's village on Sipora — most surfers either stay at the camp on the point or get dropped in by a liveaboard anchored in the channel. Paddle out through the deep-water channel that runs alongside the wave to stay off the reef, and use the same channel to kick out after your wave rather than getting washed onto the inside. Watch the tide: lower tides expose the inside reef and make entry/exit far sketchier.
Bring a clean step-up — a 6'2"–6'6" round or square-tail pintail with enough drive to make the steep take-off and hold a high line in the tube. On bigger, faster days size up to a small gun for the late drops, and only break out a shortboard on the smaller, weaker swells.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
