About Medewi Beach

Medewi Beach is one of Bali's most special surf spots for one clear reason: it has the longest left on the island. This peaceful coastal village, located on Bali's west coast, offers a relaxed pace of life, mellow waves, and an ideal atmosphere for surfers looking to improve their technique without the pressure of the crowds in Canggu or Bukit. It's a friendly, flowing wave that allows for carving and long, workable sections. The local community is welcoming and the surroundings are pure: rice paddies, palm trees, fishermen, and surf… nothing more. It's perfect for longboarders, intermediates, and progressing surfers.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The main hazard is the bottom: Medewi's point is a cobblestone/round-rock reef rather than sand, so the takeoff zone and inside are slippery and ankle-twisting β€” booties are smart, and getting washed onto the rocks at low tide is the most common way people get hurt here. It's a mellow wave but the current along the point pulls you down the line and out, so don't overcommit if you're tired. There are also sea urchins and the occasional sharp edge among the rocks, and the river mouth nearby can carry debris and murky water after rain.

Getting there

Park near the warungs and homestays at the top of the point β€” there's a small lot and roadside parking, and plenty of cheap food and coffee with a view of the lineup. From the beach, walk up the point over the rocks (watch your footing) and pick your way out from the cobblestone shelf, or paddle out from the river-mouth side and let the current ferry you up to the peak. Exit the same way back over the rocks, ideally timed between sets and not at dead low tide.

Board

This is a soft, long, peeling left made for paddle power and trim β€” a longboard or mid-length is ideal for milking the long sections, and a fish or grovel board works on the smaller, weaker days. On a bigger, cleaner swell a high-volume shortboard or fun-shape will let you carve the open faces, but you rarely need anything beefier than your everyday board here.

Localism

mellow β€” relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Bali

Full Bali surf guide β†’

Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β€” the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.

✈️Getting there

Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

πŸ›΅Getting around

The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β€” many travellers come unstuck here.

🌀️Climate & season

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β€” sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
