About Balian

Local knowledge

Hazards

The river mouth means murky, brown water after rain β€” visibility is poor and bull sharks are a genuine consideration near the channel, so avoid surfing alone or at dawn/dusk after heavy rainfall. Ketuts on the west side breaks heavy over a shallow inside of rocks of varying size and depth, and the river outflow creates strong currents that can drag you offshore or sweep you across the lineup. Rocks mixed with sand on the bottom mean a wipeout at The Peak or Ketuts can put you over uneven reef, and the river current makes the paddle back out hard on bigger days.

Getting there

Drive the coast road through Tabanan to Balian; there's parking near the warungs and homestays above the beach, and a short walk down to the sand. For The Peak and Inside Left, paddle out on the east side of the river; for Ketuts, cross to the west side where there's deep water by the river β€” use the channel to get out easily rather than punching through the inside. Grab a coffee or a beer at one of the clifftop warungs and check it from up there first, as the sandbars and channel shift with the river flow.

Board

A performance shortboard works for The Peak right and the high-performance Ketuts wall on regular days. On bigger swells bring a step-up with a bit more length and paddle power to handle the fast sections and the current back out to the lineup.

Surfing in Bali

Full Bali surf guide β†’

Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β€” the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.

✈️Getting there

Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

πŸ›΅Getting around

The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β€” many travellers come unstuck here.

🌀️Climate & season

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β€” sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
