About Bingin

Bingin Beach is one of the most iconic spots on the Bukit Peninsula, in the south of Bali. Famous for its perfect, tubular wave, this beach is a paradise for experienced surfers looking for short, powerful and mechanical barrels. Bingin's left-hander works with precision over a shallow reef, generating a technical yet highly surfable wave when conditions are ideal. The atmosphere at Bingin is more intimate and laid-back than at other spots such as Uluwatu or Padang Padang. The beach sits at the foot of a cliff, surrounded by small accommodations and cafΓ©s built literally into the rocks. There's no traffic here, no big hotels: just sea, surf and a relaxed pace of life. It's a place that combines one of Bali's best waves with a spectacular natural setting and a very active surf community.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The defining danger is the reef β€” Bingin breaks over a very shallow, sharp coral shelf that dries out at low tide, so wipeouts and even clean exits regularly draw blood; reef cuts, urchins and the occasional bone-jarring contact are routine here. The takeoff is steep and the wave bends straight onto the inside reef, so getting caught inside on a set can put you on dry rock. The lineup gets crowded and competitive when it's on, which adds its own hazard.

Getting there

Park up top near the warungs on the cliff and walk down the steep concrete stairs through the cafΓ©s and guesthouses to the beach. Timing is everything: paddle out and in around the keyhole/channel and aim for mid-to-higher tide β€” at low tide the reef is exposed and entry/exit becomes treacherous. Plenty of warungs on the rocks for food, water and a watch of the lineup before you go.

Board

Bring a sharp, well-tuned shortboard or a slightly stepped-up performance board for the steep takeoff and fast barrel sections; this is a wave for confident tube-riding, not floaty soft-tops. On bigger days size up to a step-up for the extra paddle power and control off the bottom.

Localism

moderate β€” be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Bali

Full Bali surf guide β†’

Bali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β€” the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.

✈️Getting there

Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

πŸ›΅Getting around

The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β€” many travellers come unstuck here.

🌀️Climate & season

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β€” sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
