About Uluwatu
Located on the southern tip of Bali, in the stunning Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu is one of the most famous surf destinations in the world. Known for its powerful reef breaks, consistent swells, and dramatic limestone cliffs, Uluwatu attracts surfers from every corner of the globe looking for world-class waves and unforgettable sessions. Unlike many beginner-friendly beaches in Bali, Uluwatu is best suited for intermediate, advanced, and expert surfers. The wave breaks over a shallow coral reef and offers several distinct sections, including The Peak, Racetracks, Temples, Outside Corner, and The Bombie. Each section provides different challenges depending on swell size, tide, and wind conditions. One of the reasons Uluwatu has earned legendary status is its incredible consistency. Thanks to its exposure to swells generated deep in the Indian Ocean, the wave works year-round, although the dry season from April to October generally delivers the cleanest conditions and the most reliable surf. During this period, offshore easterly winds create long, perfectly shaped walls that can offer rides of several hundred meters on the right day. The scenery is just as impressive as the surfing. Surfers access the lineup through a unique cave beneath towering cliffs, creating one of the most recognizable entrances to any surf break in the world. Above the wave, visitors can enjoy panoramic ocean views, cliffside cafΓ©s, restaurants, and the famous Uluwatu Temple. Wave sizes typically range from shoulder-high to well overhead, but during major swells, Uluwatu can produce waves exceeding 15 feet (4.5 meters). Strong currents, sharp reef, and heavy sections mean that proper surfing experience is essential before paddling out. Today, Uluwatu remains one of Bali's premier surf destinations, combining consistent waves, tropical scenery, and a vibrant surf culture. Whether you're chasing your best barrel, looking for long carving walls, or simply experiencing one of surfing's most iconic locations, Uluwatu continues to deliver some of the best surfing in Indonesia.
Local knowledge
Sharp, shallow live coral reef the whole way down, especially at the inside Racetrack section where it gets deadly thin on low tide. Strong currents sweeping toward the cave mouth and out the channel can drag you fast, and the lineup is genuinely crowded with high-level surfers, so dropping in is a real collision risk. Sea urchins and rocks around the cave, and the cave entry/exit shuts down on a big swell.
Park up top at the temple/warung area and walk down the long staircase to the cliff, where there are warungs with board storage and a view of every section. You enter and exit through the cave β time it with the sets, paddle out the channel, and on bigger swell or higher tide use the cave wisely as the exit can get hairy. Boat shuttles run from the cliff in the busy season if the cave is washing through.
Bring a high-performance shortboard for the typical head-high to overhead days, and step up to a 6'6"β7'0" semi-gun once it pushes double-overhead at Outside Corner. On smaller, cleaner days a fast little step-down works for the runners through the Peak and Racetrack.
moderate β be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide βBali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
βοΈGetting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
π΅Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110β150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β many travellers come unstuck here.
π€οΈClimate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
