About Tropical Beach
Tropical Beach, also simply called Tropicals, is a right-hand reef break located near the village of Sekongkang, in the Maluk region of West Sumbawa. Unlike the more demanding spots in the area, Tropicals offers a friendlier and more versatile wave that can be enjoyed by intermediate surfers as well as by those looking for smoother maneuvers. With a long and fun right, it's an excellent option for hybrid boards, twin fins, or days when you want to flow without the stress of the barrel. In addition, the spot is right in front of one of the best surf resorts in the area, which makes logistics easy and creates a chill atmosphere.
Local knowledge
Like most West Sumbawa waves, Tropicals breaks over a shallow coral reef, so a wipeout on the inside can mean reef cuts and scrapes β booties are worth considering on lower tides. There's a moderate current along the reef that can drag you down the point, and sea urchins lurk in the rocky sections near the entry. It's much more forgiving than the heavier slabs nearby, but the reef still demands respect at low tide.
Easy access β the wave sits right in front of the surf resort near Sekongkang in the Maluk/Sekongkang area, so you can park at the resort or beachfront and walk straight down. Paddle out through the channel beside the reef to avoid getting washed across the coral, and time your exit on a wave or use the same channel rather than scrambling over the inside reef. Warungs and the resort make logistics and food a non-issue.
A perfect spot for a hybrid, fish or twin fin on the smaller, softer days when you just want to flow and carve down the line. When it picks up size, swap to a regular shortboard or a small step-up to handle the steeper, faster sections off the takeoff.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide βSumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
βοΈGetting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5β2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1β2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
π΅Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
π€οΈClimate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
