About Miller's Right
Miller's Right is a powerful, hollow reef break on Sumba's southwest coast that demands respect from experienced surfers. It throws up fast, barreling right-handers over a sharp reef, delivering the kind of heavy tubes that advanced surfers travel far for. Swells need to be read carefully, and the shallow reef means wipeouts can be punishing. Pack a solid quiver and come prepared for one of Sumba's most thrilling waves.
Local knowledge
The reef at Miller's Right is extremely shallow at low tide — a heavy wipeout over the dry section can mean serious lacerations from razor-sharp coral, so reef booties and a helmet are strongly recommended. A strong lateral rip runs along the reef on the push and pull of swell, making it easy to get dragged past the channel if you're not paying attention. Sea urchins are thick on the reef shelf, so avoid putting your feet down anywhere outside the sandy channel.
Sumba's southwest coast roads are rough — a 4WD or motorbike is essential to reach the track leading down to the beach. Most surfers base themselves in or around Pero or Waitabula and either drive to the nearest access point or organize a short boat transfer with a local guide, which is the preferred option at bigger swells when the paddle-out through the channel is gnarly. Enter via the channel to the inside-left of the break; do not attempt to enter or exit over the reef itself.
On a standard 3–6 ft swell, a performance shortboard or step-up in the 6'2"–6'8" range with a bit of extra volume suits the fast, hollow sections perfectly. When the swell pushes above 6 ft, bring a proper step-up or semi-gun — this wave gets thick and powerful quickly, and being under-gunned on the bigger sets will get you into trouble.

✈️Getting there
Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.
🛵Getting around
Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
