About Senggigi
Senggigi is one of the most developed tourist areas in Lombok and offers a friendly, mellow wave, ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. Although it doesn't have the power or perfection of the southern spots, it's very convenient thanks to its strategic location, accessibility, and laid-back atmosphere. Senggigi beach offers a gentle reef break with maneuverable sections, perfect for a chill session before exploring the north or resting after arriving from Bali.
Local knowledge
It's a reef break, so even though the wave is mellow, you're still surfing over coral β there are shallow, dead-reef and rocky sections at lower tides, plus sea urchins in the shallows, so booties are smart. The bigger hazard here is actually shared water use: Senggigi is a busy tourist beach with swimmers, snorkelers and the occasional boat near the lineup, so stay aware on your inside paddle-outs. Currents are usually gentle but can pick up on bigger swells and with tidal flow along the bay.
Easy roadside access β Senggigi's main strip runs right along the beach, so park near any of the beachfront warungs, hotels or the Senggigi Beach area and walk straight down to the sand. Paddle out from the beach during the mid-to-high tide window when the reef has enough water over it; time it on the rising tide to avoid the dry, exposed coral at dead low. Plenty of warungs, cafΓ©s and accommodation within a few steps, so it's an easy spot to base yourself for a chill session.
A standard shortboard works on a clean day, but given the softer, lower-power nature of this wave most surfers will have more fun on a fish, hybrid or groveler to keep speed through the flatter sections. On small days a longboard or mid-length is the move β bring volume rather than a thin performance board.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide βLombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali β quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
βοΈGetting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island β a short 30β45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
π΅Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast β cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
π€οΈClimate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly AprilβOctober) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot β Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point β fires.
