About Desert Point / Bangko-Bangko

Desert Point is widely regarded as one of the finest left-hand barrels on the planet — a long, hollow tube that peels relentlessly over a very shallow reef at the southwestern tip of Lombok. At its best, it delivers extended, grinding barrels that rank among the most technically demanding waves in Indonesia, strictly for experienced and advanced surfers. The spot is remote, the reef is unforgiving, and the currents can be fierce, so preparation and respect for the ocean are essential. When the swell is running and the tide is right, the reward is a wave that surfers travel from across the globe to experience.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is extremely shallow — as little as a few inches of water over sharp, live coral at low tide — making wipeouts genuinely dangerous and lacerations near-certain if you fall in the wrong section. A powerful, unpredictable rip runs along the reef and sweeps toward the channel; get caught inside on a set and the current will drag you across the coral fast. Sea urchins are dense on the reef shelf, so booties are strongly advised, and the remote location means medical help is a serious distance away.

Getting there

Desert Point sits at the far southwestern tip of Lombok near the village of Bangko-Bangko — budget 2.5–3 hours by road from Mataram/Senggigi via Sekotong, the final stretch on a rough dirt track that requires a motorbike or 4WD. Park at the small warung area above the point and scramble down the rocky path to the water; entry is off the rocks at the top of the point on a higher tide, and you paddle out through the channel on the reef's eastern edge. Exit back to the same channel — do not attempt to exit over the reef itself.

Board

Bring a high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range as your go-to — the wave rewards a board with drive and hold through long, fast barrel sections. Step up to a 6'8"–7'2" gun when solid SW swell pushes the wave into the 6-foot-plus range, and consider a slightly fuller template on smaller, mushier days to generate speed through the longer sections.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Lombok

Full Lombok surf guide →

Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.

✈️Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.

🛵Getting around

A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.

🌤️Climate & season

Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
