About Gerupuk
Gerupuk is a large bay located east of Kuta Lombok, famous for its five different peaks accessible only by boat. This place offers waves year-round, good local infrastructure, and an authentically surfer vibe, ideal for both beginners and advanced surfers looking for consistency and easy access. From the shore, daily boat trips are organized to the different waves, which vary in size, power, and difficulty. It's a perfect training ground for improving technique, learning to read the sea, and surfing without worrying about the crowd or a dangerous reef.
Local knowledge
Most of Gerupuk's peaks break over reef, but it's generally more forgiving than the heavy slabs further west β the main concerns are shallow live coral and urchins at low tide (especially on the inside at Kids Point/Inside and over the rocky bottom at Don-Don), so booties are smart. The bay sees a lot of boat traffic ferrying surfers and tide-driven currents that can pull you toward the channel, so stay aware of taxi boats sitting in the lineup. Outside Right (Outside Gerupuk) gets more power and a faster drop when the swell is up, which is where intermediates get caught inside.
Drive to Gerupuk village east of Kuta Lombok, park near the waterfront warungs and fishing boats, and negotiate a boat taxi from the beach β all five peaks are boat-access only and the ride out is 5-15 minutes depending on the wave. Arrange a pickup time with your boatman, and use the boat to enter and exit the lineup rather than paddling the long, current-prone channel. There are plenty of warungs, surf schools and board rental on the beach, so it's an easy logistics day.
Bring your everyday shortboard for the punchier days at Outside Right; on the smaller, fatter inside peaks like Kids Point a fish or groveler will keep you flowing. Step up half a foot if a real swell fills in on the outside, but most days an all-rounder is plenty.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide βLombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali β quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
βοΈGetting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island β a short 30β45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
π΅Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast β cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
π€οΈClimate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly AprilβOctober) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot β Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point β fires.
