About Are Guling
Are Guling is a surf spot located just 15 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, and is characterized by a fast and powerful right over reef, as well as a friendlier and longer left. It's an undeveloped bay with semi-remote access, which guarantees small crowds even in high season. Are Guling is one of southern Lombok's best-kept secrets: it breaks with good shape, handles the wind well, and offers waves for both intermediate and advanced surfers. The view from the lineup, surrounded by green hills and an open bay, makes it a spectacular place to surf.
Local knowledge
Both peaks break over a shallow, sharp coral reef that gets dangerously exposed at lower tides — the fast right in particular slabs hard onto dry reef, so reef cuts, urchins and the odd rock are real risks. There's a noticeable current pulling through the bay that can drag you toward the channel on a bigger swell, and the semi-remote setting means help is far away if you get pinned on the reef. Tide timing is everything here; surf it too low and you're surfing a razor.
About 15 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by scooter or car down rough back roads to the bay — park near the warungs or the beach at the head of the bay, where a few simple stalls offer water and a watchful eye on your gear. From the sand it's a moderate paddle out to the peaks; use the deeper channel between the left and right to get out and to exit, and time your entry/exit on a pushing mid tide to avoid scraping over the inside reef.
Bring your regular shortboard for the playful, longer left on small-to-medium days. When the right is firing and the swell jumps, step up to a 6'4"–6'8" with some extra paddle and hold so you can make the fast, steep drop and outrun the reef section.

✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
