About Are Guling
Are Guling ist ein Surfspot, der nur 15 Minuten westlich von Kuta Lombok liegt und durch eine schnelle und kraftvolle Rechte über Riff sowie eine freundlichere und längere Linke gekennzeichnet ist. Es ist eine unentwickelte Bucht mit semi-remote Zugang, was selbst in der Hochsaison kleine Menschenmengen garantiert. Are Guling ist eines der bestgehüteten Geheimnisse im Süden von Lombok: Es bricht mit guter Form, hält den Wind gut aus und bietet Wellen für sowohl fortgeschrittene als auch erfahrene Surfer. Der Blick von der Lineup, umgeben von grünen Hügeln und einer offenen Bucht, macht es zu einem spektakulären Ort zum Surfen.
Local knowledge
Beide Peaks brechen über ein flaches, scharfes Korallenriff, das bei niedrigem Wasserstand gefährlich exponiert wird – insbesondere die schnelle Rechte schlägt hart auf trockenes Riff, sodass Riffwunden, Seeigel und der ein oder andere Stein echte Risiken darstellen. Es gibt eine spürbare Strömung, die durch die Bucht zieht und dich bei einem größeren Swell in Richtung Kanal ziehen kann, und die semi-remote Lage bedeutet, dass Hilfe weit weg ist, wenn du auf dem Riff feststeckst. Die Gezeiten sind hier alles; surf es zu niedrig und du surfst auf einer Klinge.
Etwa 15 Minuten westlich von Kuta Lombok mit dem Roller oder Auto über rauhe Nebenstraßen zur Bucht – parke in der Nähe der Warungs oder am Strand am Kopf der Bucht, wo ein paar einfache Stände Wasser anbieten und ein wachsames Auge auf dein Equipment haben. Vom Sand aus ist es ein moderates Paddle zu den Peaks; benutze den tieferen Kanal zwischen der linken und der rechten Welle, um hinauszukommen und um auszutreten, und timme deinen Eintritt/Austritt bei aufschiebendem mittlerem Wasser, um zu vermeiden, dass du über das innere Riff schrabst.
Bring dein reguläres Shortboard für die verspielte, längere Linke an kleinen bis mittleren Tagen mit. Wenn die Rechte läuft und der Swell steigt, steig auf ein 6'4"–6'8" mit etwas zusätzlichem Paddel und Halt um den schnellen, steilen Drop zu meistern und das Riff zu überholen.

✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays.
