About G-Land
G-Land, also known as Grajagan, is considered by many to be the best left in the world. Located within Alas Purwo National Park on the eastern tip of Java, G-Land is a wave legendary for its length, power, and tubular perfection. It was one of the first surf spots in Indonesia to gain international fame, ever since it was discovered by Australian surfers in the 1970s. The wave breaks over a volcanic reef with long, fast, tubular sections that demand technique, experience, and a lot of confidence. It's a remote, isolated spot that's 100% dedicated to surf, accessible only by speedboat from Bali or after a 4x4 journey through the jungle. It's ideal for advanced surfers seeking a raw and epic experience.
Local knowledge
Shallow, sharp volcanic reef that gets dangerously thin on the inside, especially through the Speed Reef and Launching Pads sections β a fall on a big day can pin you over dry rock. Strong currents push you down the reef and out toward the channel, the takeoff zone shifts fast on bigger swells, and the jungle backdrop means real isolation: medical help is hours away, so cuts and reef infections are a constant concern. Snakes, monkeys and the odd report of crocodiles in the river mouths add to the remote-wilderness feel; treat every wound seriously here.
No road access for surfers β you arrive by speedboat charter from Bali (Grajagan or Benoa) or via a long 4x4 trek through Alas Purwo National Park, almost always as part of a surf camp package. Camps sit right behind the trees at Kongs and Money Trees; you paddle out from the beach in front of camp, timing your entry off the sand and using the channel to get out. Watch the tides and reef exposure when exiting β pick a deeper channel rather than scrambling over the inside reef at low water.
Bring a quiver: a high-performance shortboard or step-up for the playful 3-5ft days at Kongs, and a solid 6'6"β7'2" semi-gun or proper gun for serious Speed Reef and Launching Pads on overhead-plus swells. Boards take a beating on the reef here, so bring backups, plenty of leashes and a ding repair kit.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Java
Full Java surf guide βJava is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.
βοΈGetting there
Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.
π΅Getting around
Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks β but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.
π€οΈClimate & season
Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time β consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
