About G-Land
G-Land, également connu sous le nom de Grajagan, est considéré par beaucoup comme le meilleur spot de gauche au monde. Situé dans le parc national d'Alas Purwo à l'extrémité est de Java, G-Land est une vague légendaire pour sa longueur, sa puissance et sa perfection tubulaire. C'était l'un des premiers spots de surf en Indonésie à gagner une renommée internationale, depuis sa découverte par des surfeurs australiens dans les années 1970. La vague se brise sur un récif volcanique avec de longues sections tubulaires rapides qui exigent technique, expérience et beaucoup de confiance. C'est un endroit éloigné et isolé, entièrement dédié au surf, accessible uniquement par bateau rapide depuis Bali ou après un trajet en 4x4 à travers la jungle. C'est idéal pour les surfeurs avancés à la recherche d'une expérience brute et épique.
Local knowledge
Récif volcanique peu profond et tranchant qui devient dangereusement fin à l'intérieur, surtout dans les sections Speed Reef et Launching Pads — une chute lors d'une grosse journée peut vous coincer sur des rochers secs. De forts courants vous poussent le long du récif et vers le chenal, la zone de décollage change rapidement lors de plus grosses houles, et le décor de jungle signifie une véritable isolation : l'aide médicale est à des heures de distance, donc les coupures et les infections dues au récif sont une préoccupation constante. Des serpents, des singes et quelques rapports de crocodiles dans les bouches de rivière ajoutent à l'ambiance de nature sauvage ; traitez chaque blessure sérieusement ici.
Pas d'accès routier pour les surfeurs — vous arrivez par charter de bateau rapide depuis Bali (Grajagan ou Benoa) ou via une longue randonnée en 4x4 à travers le parc national d'Alas Purwo, presque toujours dans le cadre d'un forfait de surf camp. Les camps se trouvent juste derrière les arbres à Kongs et Money Trees ; vous pagayez depuis la plage devant le camp, en chronométrant votre entrée sur le sable et en utilisant le chenal pour sortir. Faites attention aux marées et à l'exposition du récif lors de la sortie — choisissez un chenal plus profond plutôt que de grimper sur le récif intérieur à marée basse.
Apportez une quiver : un shortboard haute performance ou un step-up pour les journées ludiques de 3 à 5 pieds à Kongs, et un solide semi-gun de 6'6" à 7'2" ou un vrai gun pour le sérieux Speed Reef et Launching Pads lors de houles supérieures à la tête. Les planches prennent des coups sur le récif ici, donc apportez des rechanges, beaucoup de leash et un kit de réparation de fissures.

Surfing in Java
Full Java surf guide →Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.
✈️Getting there
Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.
🛵Getting around
Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.
🌤️Climate & season
Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
