About Keramas
Keramas is one of the most famous and powerful surf spots on the east coast of Bali. Located in Gianyar, it's a reef break that offers a fast, powerful wave with tubular sections, ideal for upper-intermediate to advanced surfers. It's known for being one of the few spots in Bali that works best during the wet season, thanks to the offshore winds from the west. Keramas has hosted international events such as the WSL Championship Tour, which positions it as one of the most respected spots in the country. It breaks over a dark volcanic reef bottom, with views of Mount Agung on clear days, offering a unique and visually stunning surf experience.
Local knowledge
Keramas breaks over a sharp, dark volcanic reef that gets very shallow on the inside, especially at lower tides β the wave is fast and sucks hard off the bottom, so wipeouts on the takeoff or in the barrel section put you straight onto rock. The reef is uneven with ledges and boils, and a strong rip runs along the lineup that you can use to paddle out but which will drag you down the beach if you're not paying attention. It's a heavy, performance wave that draws good surfers, so expect speed, hold-downs, and the occasional collision in a busy peak.
Drive to Pantai Keramas in Gianyar; there's parking near the beachfront warungs and the big resorts/surf clubs (Komune is the landmark right on the break), and you walk straight down the black-sand beach. Paddle out beside the rip channel rather than punching straight through the peak, and watch your timing on the exit β come in on the sand-bottom sections or during a lull to avoid getting washed across the reef.
Bring a fast, drivey shortboard or a step-up when it's overhead and pumping β Keramas rewards a board you can get into the barrel quickly and project down the line. On smaller, weaker days a slightly fuller groveler or hybrid works, but this wave really comes alive when it has size and you'll want some extra paddle power for the steep takeoff.
moderate β be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Bali
Full Bali surf guide βBali is the beating heart of Indonesian surfing β the island that put the archipelago on the world surf map back in the early 1970s, and still the easiest place on earth to fall in love with riding waves in the tropics. It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
βοΈGetting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
π΅Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110β150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β many travellers come unstuck here.
π€οΈClimate & season
Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
