About Canggu
Canggu is one of the epicenters of modern surfing in Bali, famous not only for its waves but also for its vibrant lifestyle, cafΓ©s, coworking spaces and international community. Located north of Seminyak, Canggu features several spots along the same stretch of coast: Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Echo Beach and Pererenan, each with distinct characteristics that suit all levels. Canggu is ideal both for beginners who want to learn on a friendly wave and for intermediate and advanced surfers seeking more powerful, maneuverable walls or even tubular sections on big days. On top of that, the whole environment is designed for the modern surfer: shops, accommodations, board rentals, healthy cafΓ©s, nightlife and unforgettable sunsets.
Local knowledge
The reef here is mostly flat lava rock and patchy coral rather than razor coral, but it gets shallow and sticky at low tide, especially at Echo Beach where the takeoff zone dries out fast β easy to clip a fin or get scraped. The bigger danger is the crowd: this stretch packs in beginners, surf-school groups and tourists with zero awareness, so loose boards, dropped-in waves and collisions are the real risk. Strong sideshore current can sweep you down the beach on bigger days, and there's regular boat and SUP traffic on the inside.
Easy road access β park your scooter at any of the warungs lining Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Echo Beach or Pererenan and walk straight down to the sand. Paddle out from the beach; at Batu Bolong and Old Man's it's a mellow beach paddle, while Echo Beach is best entered off the rocks on a higher tide to avoid the shallow inside reef on the way out. Plenty of cafΓ©s, board rentals and beach bars right behind the lineup if you need anything.
A regular shortboard works well on punchy mid-to-bigger days, but on the typical small-to-mellow Canggu sessions a fish, mid-length or groveler will get you far more waves. Longboards are right at home at Batu Bolong and Old Man's β just keep control in the crowd.

It packs an absurd density of quality breaks into a small island: machine-perfect reef barrels on the Bukit Peninsula, mellow beach breaks on the west coast, and a Bali Sea wave or two over on the east.
βοΈGetting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
π΅Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110β150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high β many travellers come unstuck here.

Bali has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β sunny, lower humidity, and the prime surf window for the south and west coasts, with consistent groundswell and clean morning offshore winds. This is peak season; expect crowds and book ahead.
