About Super Suck
Super Suck is an extremely fast and hollow left-hander, located near Maluk, on the west coast of Sumbawa. This reef break is famous for its take-off straight into the barrel, sections with a thick lip and a vertical wall, which demand perfect reading and confidence on every paddle. The wave breaks over a very shallow reef and, with solid swell, can generate long, perfect barrels that run for more than 150 meters. Super Suck doesn't forgive mistakes, but on good days, it's one of the most exciting waves on the planet.
Local knowledge
Extremely shallow, dry-at-low-tide live coral reef directly beneath the takeoff and barrel section β wipeouts here regularly end in deep reef cuts, and getting pinned on the inside is the real danger when the suck-out exposes the bottom. The wave is freight-train fast and unforgiving, so a blown takeoff puts you straight onto the reef; sea urchins and the strong longshore current that drags you down toward the rocky inside section add to it. On a good swell the lineup gets packed with travelling pros and chargers, and the takeoff zone is tight and aggressive.
Most surfers reach it by boat from Maluk or stay at one of the surf camps near the point and walk/paddle out β there's a dirt track access down by the headland where you can park. Time your entry off the rocks at the point and use the rip/channel on the shoulder to get out the back without grinding across the reef; getting back in is easiest by riding a wave toward the inside and exiting at the same point on a rising tide. Best at mid-to-high tide β at low the reef sucks dry and it becomes near-unrideable and far more dangerous.
Bring a fast, drawn-out small-wave to step-up tube board β a slightly stepped-up shortboard or a clean barrel-specific board with extra drive helps you make the steep, fast takeoff and hold the line through the long tube. On bigger, more solid days size up to a 6'4"β6'8" step-up; this is no place for a fish or anything sluggish.
moderate β be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide βSumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
βοΈGetting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5β2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1β2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
π΅Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
π€οΈClimate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
