About Scar Reef
Scar Reef is a powerful, sharp left-hander located in Jereweh, near the town of Taliwang in West Sumbawa. Its name is no coincidence: the wave breaks with force over a rough, shallow reef, which makes it a spot that is as perfect as it is risky. It's known for generating perfect barrels and long lines, with sections that demand total precision. It's a cult destination for experienced surfers looking for real challenges. When it's on point, Scar Reef can compete with Desert Point or G-Land in wave quality.
Local knowledge
The name says it all β Scar Reef breaks over a shallow, sharp coral shelf that will shred skin and snap boards, and the heaviest sections grind in barely overhead-deep water. Strong currents pull along the reef and out the channel, especially on bigger swells, so you'll be paddling constantly to hold position. Sea urchins lurk in the inside coral, and the remote location means medical help is hours away β treat every cut seriously and bring a proper first-aid kit.
It's out near Jereweh/Taliwang in remote West Sumbawa, reached by a long drive from the ferry at Poto Tano or via Sumbawa Besar; most surfers post up at one of the simple losmen or surf camps along the coast. From the camps it's a short walk down to the beach and then a paddle out through the channel β line up off the headland and use the rip channel to get out the back rather than fighting straight through the reef. There are a couple of basic warungs nearby but stock up on water, food and supplies in Taliwang since options at the break are thin.
Bring your good shortboard with extra glass or epoxy for the punchy, hollow days, and a step-up or small step-up (6'2"β6'6") for when the swell jumps overhead β you want paddle power and control for the long, fast left walls. On solid days a small gun is worth having, and pack spare fins and plenty of ding repair.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide βSumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
βοΈGetting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5β2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1β2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
π΅Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
π€οΈClimate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October β this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
