About Maluk
Maluk is Sumbawa's most beginner-friendly option in this stretch, a sandy beach break that offers forgiving, rolling waves to those just starting out. The softer bottom takes away much of the fear factor, making it a comfortable place to practise pop-ups and build confidence in the water. The bay itself is beautiful, with calm periods between sets giving newcomers plenty of time to rest and regroup. Surf schools and beginners will feel right at home here.
Local knowledge
Being a beach break, rip currents are the main concern — particularly along the bay's edges when swell picks up, so beginners should stay in the central, shallower section and keep an eye on their position relative to shore. Occasional sea urchins can be found near the rocky outcrops at either end of the bay, so booties are worth considering if you're wandering outside the sandy zone. On bigger swells the shorebreak can close out quickly, catching new surfers off guard at the water's edge.
Maluk is easy to reach by motorbike or car from Taliwang or the mining town of Benete — follow the coastal road south and look for the bay signposted toward Maluk village; there's roadside parking near the beach warungs. Walk straight off the sand and paddle out through the middle of the bay where the shore break is most forgiving; no boat required. Exit the same way — aim for the central beach and let the whitewater assist you in.
A longboard or a wide, high-volume mini-mal (8'0–9'0) is ideal for making the most of Maluk's soft, rolling waves, giving beginners plenty of stability for practising pop-ups. On the rare days a bit more size shows up, a mid-length funboard still handles it comfortably — leave the shortboard at home until you're ready to step down in volume.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
