About Benete

Benete is a consistent reef break set against the dramatic backdrop of Sumbawa's southwest coast, offering intermediate surfers a solid and enjoyable wave. The break tends to produce clean, well-shaped walls that allow for flowing, progressive surfing without the extreme consequences of heavier reef spots nearby. It's a reliable option when swell is in the water and works well across a range of conditions. A great spot to tick off on any Sumbawa surf exploration.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef here is shallow at low tide — live coral and sharp rock can cause nasty lacerations if you fall badly, so booties are worth considering. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge on bigger swells that can sweep you off the takeoff zone; swim parallel to shore if caught. Sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices around the entry and exit, so step carefully and avoid putting your hands down.

Getting there

Benete sits on Sumbawa's southwest coast near the port of Benete Bay — most surfers base themselves in Sekongkang or Maluk and drive the coastal road south, parking near the small fishing settlement by the bay. Paddle out from the sandy-fringed channel on the north side of the reef, which gives you a cleaner entry and keeps you away from the shallower inside sections; exit the same way and watch the reef on your right as you come in.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'8" range suits most conditions here — the wave rewards rail surfing and a bit of drive through the turns. On smaller, softer days a fish or hybrid will help you make the most of the gentler walls; if a solid swell pushes through, step up to a slightly longer, narrower template with more paddle power.

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
