About Wanokaka

Wanokaka is a scenic reef break on Sumba that offers intermediate surfers a playful, accessible wave with genuine character. The break produces consistent, rideable walls that give you plenty of room to work turns and build reef experience. Its relatively forgiving nature compared to nearby spots makes it a great base to explore Sumba's surf.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow at low tide — live coral and sea urchins make wipeouts punishing, so booties are strongly recommended and reef shoes are wise for entry and exit. A defined rip runs along the reef edge that can sweep you into the impact zone; use it to paddle out but know how to exit it. Crowds are usually light, but boat traffic from passing fishing vessels can catch you off-guard, especially on the paddle out.

Getting there

Wanokaka is reached via the coastal road heading southwest from Waikabubak — look for the Wanokaka village turn-off and follow the dirt track down toward the bay; a small warung near the beach is your landmark for parking. Entry is best made from the rocky shelf on the north side of the bay at mid-to-high tide, timing sets to avoid the surge; exit to the same shelf or sandy stretch on the inside. No boat is required — it's a straightforward paddle from the beach.

Board

A versatile shortboard (6'2"–6'6") or a mid-length handles the playful walls well on standard swell days; bring a step-up (6'6"–6'10") if solid south or southwest swells are forecast, as the reef can deliver punchier, faster sections with size. Avoid fragile or overly thin boards — the reef is unforgiving on a bad fall.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba

Full Sumba surf guide →

Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.

✈️Getting there

Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.

🛵Getting around

Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
