About The Peak (Simeulue)
The Peak is a very consistent A-frame located near the village of Busung, south of the capital (Sinabang), and it's known for its dual direction: it offers a longer, more maneuverable left, and a shorter but more powerful right. It's the wave closest to the airport and to the populated areas, which makes it the most accessible spot on the whole island. Its easy access and consistency make it a great option both for intermediate surfers looking to progress and for advanced surfers who want quick, effective sessions. The Peak is an essential spot in Simeulue, being one of the most accessible, consistent, and versatile on the island. Ideal for surfers of all levels, The Peak is the spot where the surf day begins (and often ends) for those staying near the main village or looking for steady sessions without too much logistics.
Local knowledge
Like most Simeulue waves, The Peak breaks over a shallow coral reef that gets very sharp and unforgiving at low tide, especially on the punchy right where you can get pushed onto dry reef. Watch for sea urchins in the shallows and a current that runs across the A-frame on bigger swells, pulling you toward the inside. Simeulue is malaria country, so cover up at dawn and dusk sessions.
Being the closest wave to Sinabang and the airport, this is the easy one — you can reach it by road from the Busung area and most local losmen and surf camps near the village are a short ride away. Paddle out through the channel beside the peak rather than straight over the reef, and time your exit on a pushing tide to avoid getting dragged across the shallow coral on the way in.
Your standard high-performance shortboard works for everyday waist-to-head-high days, and the maneuverable left rewards a quiver board you can throw around. When a solid swell fills in and the right gets thick and fast, grab a step-up with a bit more drive to handle the steeper drops over the reef.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue
Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
🌤️Climate & season
Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
