About Dylan’s Right
Dylan's Right (also simply called Dylan's) is a sharp, long, and hollow right located on the southwest coast of Simeulue, in front of a deep channel with a coral bottom. Its take-off is committing, but the reward is a perfect, drawn-out barrel, followed by sections ideal for maneuvers. It's a wave that has quickly gained fame for its consistency, its quality, and the small crowds compared to similar spots in the Mentawais or Bali.
Local knowledge
Shallow, sharp live coral the whole way down the line — the takeoff is over reef that gets very thin on bigger swells, and wipeouts here mean reef cuts, not soft sand. The wave breaks alongside a deep channel, so there's noticeable current pulling you toward and along it on the bigger sets, and on a low spring tide the inside reef ledge is genuinely dangerous. You're remote on Simeulue's southwest coast, so any reef laceration or board hold-down is hours from real medical help — bring a good first-aid kit and treat coral cuts seriously to avoid infection.
Most surfers reach Dylan's by boat or stay at one of the nearby surf camps and paddle out via the deep channel that runs beside the lineup — that channel is your friend, both for the easy paddle out and for an exit that keeps you off the dry reef. If you're shore-accessing, expect a walk over reef and a paddle from a small beach or point near the camp; reef booties are smart for the entry and exit. Time your sessions around the tide — mid-to-high gives you more water over the inside and a safer exit.
This is a hollow, fast, performance right that demands a clean step-up — a good 6'4"–6'8" pintail or step-up for solid head-high-plus days to make the steep, committed takeoff and hold a line through the barrel. On the bigger, heavier swells bring a 7'0"+ semi-gun; save the shortboard only for the smaller, more playful days.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue
Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
🌤️Climate & season
Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
