About Pitstops
Pitstops is a smooth, fun, and maneuverable right-hander located right next to E-Bay, on the north coast of the island of Siberut (Playgrounds area). This wave breaks over a deeper, more forgiving reef, which makes it ideal for intermediates, modern longboards, quads, and twin fins. The wave is known for its open wall, its friendly pace, and its consistency when the swell isn't too big. It's a perfect place to progress, try new lines, or simply flow without pressure. Pitstops, one of the friendliest, most fun, and most versatile spots in the Playgrounds area of Mentawai! Ideal for surfers looking for clean maneuvers, flow, relaxed sessions, and a variety of conditions. Pitstops is the perfect spot to enjoy surfing without pressure.
Local knowledge
The reef here is deeper and more forgiving than most Playgrounds breaks, but it's still live coral — expect shallow sections on lower tides and the usual urchins tucked into the heads. The main thing to watch is the inside of the bay where the wave fades into shallower coral, and the boat traffic, since Pitstops sits right next to E-Bay in a busy charter zone with multiple boats anchored on a good day.
Boat-only access, like the rest of the Playgrounds — you'll arrive by charter or speedboat from a Siberut-area camp and the boats anchor in the channel just off the peak. Paddle in over the deeper reef, sit on the takeoff shoulder, and stay clear of anchored boats; exit the same way out the back rather than letting the wave push you onto the inside coral.
A forgiving, performance-friendly wave that rewards looser equipment — bring a fish, twin or quad on small, playful days, or a modern longboard if you want to nose-ride the open wall. On a bigger swell step up to your regular shortboard, but Pitstops backs off well before it ever needs a gun.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
