About Macaronis
Macaronis, known among surfers as "Macca's", is a perfectly shaped left-hander located in the South Mentawai archipelago, on the island of Pagai. Its shape is so precise that it looks computer-designed: clean walls, consistent sections, and predictable barrels. It's a wave that has it all: ideal for progressive maneuvers, deep barrels, and endless lines. It's considered one of the best waves on the planet, and has been the setting for countless film shoots, competitions, and historic sessions.
Local knowledge
The reef gets genuinely shallow on the inside "surgery section," especially below mid-tide, and the takeoff zone is sharp live coral that will leave its mark on a wipeout — booties and a helmet aren't a bad idea for the inside. Macca's is one of the most consistently crowded waves in the Mentawais, so the biggest real hazard is the lineup itself: dropped-in collisions and dozens of surfers packed onto charter boats and camp guests all hunting the same pocket. Rips funnel along the reef on bigger swells, and there's steady boat traffic in the channel.
Almost everyone arrives by charter boat or stays at the Macaronis Resort/camp on the bay — the lineup sits right out front, so it's a short paddle from the boat or beach. Paddle out through the channel that runs alongside the wave rather than over the reef, and use that same channel to exit; never try to cross the shallow inside section to get back. There's no walk-in access of note — this is a boat-and-camp wave.
On the typical waist-to-head-high fun days bring your high-performance shortboard or even a slightly fuller groveler — Macca's loves speed and tight pocket surfing. When it jumps to overhead and the inside section starts running fast and hollow, step up a few inches for a board that holds through the barrel and lets you make the surgery section.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
