About Lance’s Left
Lance's Left is a reliable, fast, and fun left-hander located on the island of Sipora, not far from the famous HT's (Lance's Right). Its name comes from the legendary surfer who "discovered" both spots in the 90s. Unlike HT's, this wave is less tubular and more open, which makes it perfect for surfers looking for carving, snaps, cutbacks, and flow. On big days it can also offer hollow sections.
Local knowledge
Sharp, shallow live coral reef sits beneath the whole wave, and it gets seriously shallow on the inside and at lower tides — a wipeout here means reef cuts, so booties and a first-aid kit are wise. There's a current that runs along the reef on bigger swells that can drag you toward the inside bommies, and being a remote outer-island break, any injury is a long boat ride from real medical help.
This is a boat-access wave only — most surfers come on a charter boat or a speedboat day-trip from camps around Sipora/Katiet, sitting just up the reef from HT's (Lance's Right). Anchor or get dropped in the channel and paddle to the takeoff; use the channel on the inside shoulder for a clean exit and never try to come in over the dry reef.
Bring your standard performance shortboard for the head-high to overhead carving days when the wall opens up. On bigger swells when it stands up and throws hollow sections, step up to a slightly longer, drawn-out board to handle the speed and hold your line on the faster sections.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
