About Kandui Left

Kandui Left, or No-Kandui, is a high-risk, very high-reward left-hander. Located in the northern region of the Mentawai archipelago, within the area known as Playgrounds, this wave breaks over a sharp, perfectly shaped reef, generating one of the fastest and most hollow walls in the world. When it's working well, Kandui Left is a monster: long barrels, extreme speed, and ultra-technical sections that challenge the best surfers in the world. It's not a wave for everyone, but for those who are ready, it can deliver the wave of their lives.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Extremely shallow, razor-sharp live coral reef directly under the barrel β€” this wave throws square and dry-reef wipeouts are common, so cuts, reef rash and worse are a real risk on every fall. The take-off and end section break over the most exposed coral, and you're a long boat ride from any proper medical help, so a serious laceration here is no joke. Strong current pulls down the reef on bigger swells, and the lineup can get crowded with chartered boats and the resort crew when it's firing.

Getting there

Boat-only access β€” there's no land entry, so you'll reach it by charter boat or speedboat from a Playgrounds-area resort or liveaboard. Jump off the boat at the channel on the shoulder side and paddle into the lineup; never try to enter or exit over the dry reef on the inside, and sit in the channel to wait for sets. Time your kick-out toward the deeper channel rather than getting washed onto the coral.

Board

Bring a clean step-up β€” a 6'4"–6'8" pintail or rounded-pin that lets you make the steep drop and hold a high, fast line through the tube. On bigger, heavier days size up to a small gun (7'0"+) for paddle commitment; leave the small-wave boards on the boat, this is a serious barrel that demands a board you can fully trust.

Localism

moderate β€” be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai

Full Mentawai surf guide β†’

If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.

✈️Getting there

All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.

πŸ›΅Getting around

The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat β€” either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.

🌀️Climate & season

The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29Β°C). There's no real winter β€” just wetter and drier patterns.
