About Greenbush
Greenbush is one of the most tubular, fast, and violent lefts in all of Indonesia. Located in the southern Mentawai, near the island of Pagai, this wave breaks over a very shallow reef, creating thick, long, and extremely dangerous barrels. This spot is not for everyone: it requires an advanced or professional level, excellent line reading, and a lot of confidence. Wipeouts here can be costly. Greenbush, one of the most intense, dangerous, and perfect waves in South Mentawai! This spot is pure adrenaline: an ultra-hollow, technical left for surfers with nerves of steel and experience in heavy barrels over dry reef.
Local knowledge
Extremely shallow, sharp live coral reef — this is one of the most dangerous waves in the Mentawais and a blown takeoff or air-drop here will put you on dry reef, so expect serious lacerations, board breakage and potential injury. The wave is a thick, fast, slabby left that pitches hard over the inside section; getting drilled means a heavy beating in very little water. Strong currents push along the reef on bigger swells, and a hold-down on a closeout barrel is a real risk, so don't surf it without backup and a clear head.
Greenbush is boat-access only, reached by charter or speedboat from the South Pagai area; most surfers arrive on a Mentawai boat trip and anchor in the channel off the reef. Paddle in from the channel and line up off the peak — there's no easy beach entry, and your boat/skiff is your exit, so keep it nearby for pickups and emergencies. Go on a mid-to-higher tide to keep a little more water over the reef.
Bring a tube-specific board you trust completely — a fast, low-rockered step-up or pintail (think 6'4"–6'10" depending on size) that lets you make the late, vertical drop and hold a high line in the barrel. On bigger days size up to a proper step-up/semi-gun; this is no place for anything that won't get you in early and down the line fast.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
