About Ebay
E-Bay is a hollow, fast, and extremely aesthetic left located in the northern part of the Mentawai, within the area known as Playgrounds. This wave breaks over a sharp, predictable reef, generating crystalline barrels and critical sections, especially during the early hours of the day. It's ideal for advanced surfers looking for clean, technical barrels, but it can also offer manageable sections for intermediates when conditions are mellower.
Local knowledge
The reef at E-Bay is shallow, sharp and very unforgiving, especially on the inside section and at low tide where it dries out over live coral — getting caught inside here means a real chance of reef rash, cuts and dings. The wave is fast and hollow, so wipeouts tend to bounce you onto the bottom; sea urchins and the occasional current running along the reef edge add to the mix. On a decent swell with charter boats parked out the back it gets crowded with experienced surfers, so watch for traffic and drop-ins in the takeoff zone.
E-Bay is a boat-only break in the Playgrounds area of the northern Mentawais, reached by charter boat or speedboat from a surf camp or liveaboard — there's no land access of note. Anchor or get dropped in the channel on the shoulder, then paddle across to the peak; use the channel to get back out and time your exit on a set lull rather than getting washed onto the inside reef. Best surfed mid-to-high tide to keep some water over the reef.
Bring your standard high-performance shortboard for the chest-to-head fun days, but step up to a 6'4"–6'8" pintail or step-up when it's overhead and pumping to make the steep, fast takeoffs and hold a clean line through the barrel. A slightly pulled-in tube board you trust under the lip is worth more than extra volume here.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
