About Beng Bengs
Beng Beng is a mellow, fun left located in the northern region of the Mentawai, within the famous Playgrounds area. It's known for its wide wall, maneuverable sections, relatively safe bottom, and excellent accessibility. This spot is ideal for intermediate surfers or for relaxing after demanding sessions at Kandui or Bankvaults. It's not a tubular wave like the most famous ones in the Mentawai, but its consistency and friendly shape make it one of the favorites for enjoying long, pressure-free sessions. Unlike more intense spots like Rifles or Kandui, Beng Beng is ideal for intermediates, twin fins, modern longboarders, and freesurfers looking for flow rather than technical barrels. A much-loved wave in the Playgrounds area, in the north of the archipelago.
Local knowledge
The reef here is more forgiving than the heavier Playgrounds breaks, but it's still live coral that gets shallow on the inside at low tide, so expect cuts and the odd urchin if you get washed onto the shelf. The main hazard is the crowd β this is one of the most accessible, beginner-friendly waves in the area, so charter boats and surf-camp groups stack up fast and drop-ins are common. Watch for the gentle current that runs along the reef on bigger swells.
Boat-only access like the rest of the northern Mentawai β you'll come in by speedboat or dinghy from your charter or from a Playgrounds-area camp (the spot sits right in the Playgrounds cluster off Karangmajat/Nyang Nyang). Jump off the boat in the channel on the shoulder and paddle into the lineup; exit the same way out toward the channel rather than over the dry inside reef at low tide.
This is a playful, soft-walled left that rewards a fun board β your everyday shortboard works, but it really lights up on a twin/fish on the smaller days and a modern longboard or mid-length is a blast here. No need for a step-up or gun unless a big swell is pushing through, in which case grab a touch more length for paddle power.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide βIf there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
βοΈGetting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
π΅Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat β either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
π€οΈClimate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27β29Β°C). There's no real winter β just wetter and drier patterns.
