About Selong Belanak
Selong Belanak is a wide, curved beach located about 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, famous for its soft white sand, mountainous surroundings, and waves that are perfect for learning to surf. It's one of the most recommended spots for surf lessons, with a relaxed, safe atmosphere and plenty of local infrastructure. Unlike Lombok's reef breaks, here the waves break over a sandy bottom in a progressive way, making the take-off smooth and easy to control. It's also an excellent place for longboarders and surfers who simply want to flow and enjoy themselves without pressure.
Local knowledge
Being a sand-bottom beach break, Selong Belanak is about as forgiving as Lombok gets, but the bigger danger here is the crowd β dozens of surf-school beginners on soft-tops, pushed waves, and runaway boards make the inside a real collision zone, so keep your head up. Rip currents form along the bay, especially toward the headland corners and after a few days of swell, and they can drag a tired beginner out fast; the shorebreak can also get punchy and dumpy at higher tides on the bigger days.
Easy access β drive about 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok on a now-decent sealed road and park at the beachfront lot (small fee); plenty of warungs and surf-rental shacks line the sand. Simply walk straight off the beach and paddle out through the channels between the peaks β no reef, no rocks, just a sandy, gently sloping entry. The mellow take-off zone sits in the middle of the bay, with cleaner, less crowded peaks if you walk down toward either end.
This is longboard and mini-mal heaven β bring a log or a foamie on the typical small, soft days to make the most of the long, mellow walls. When a bit more swell fills in, a fish or funboard will let you find the steeper sections and get away from the school crowds.
mellow β relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide βLombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali β quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
βοΈGetting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island β a short 30β45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
π΅Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast β cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
π€οΈClimate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly AprilβOctober) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot β Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point β fires.
