About Batu Karas
Batu Karas is a mellow, sheltered point break that has earned a beloved reputation as one of Java's best beginner and progression spots. Long, gentle walls peel consistently, giving newcomers plenty of time to find their feet and intermediate surfers room to practice turns. The relaxed fishing village atmosphere and calm waters make it an ideal place to spend a few days improving your surfing. It rarely gets too crowded or too heavy.
Local knowledge
The reef underneath is relatively shallow at low tide — mostly rock and dead coral — so wipe-outs close to the point can result in scrapes; booties are worth considering for beginners. A mild rip runs along the point on bigger swells, which can catch newer surfers off-guard, though it's easily paddled out of by angling toward the bay. The inner section can get a little boat-choppy with local fishing traffic crossing the channel.
Drive or ojek into Batu Karas village off the main Pangandaran road — there's roadside parking near the warungs and surf shops lining the beachfront. Paddle out from the sandy beach at the base of the point; the channel to the left of the break offers the easiest, safest entry and exit. On bigger days, time your entry to avoid the small shore dump over the flat rock ledge at the tip of the point.
A longboard or a mid-length (8–9 ft) is the go-to here and will maximise your wave count on the long, slow walls. Intermediate surfers looking to work on turns can get away with a fun-shape or a wider fish on the rare days it gets a bit of size.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Java
Full Java surf guide →Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.
✈️Getting there
Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.
🛵Getting around
Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.
🌤️Climate & season
Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
