About T-Land / Boa
T-Land, también conocida como Boa, es la ola emblema de la Isla Rote y una de las mejores izquierdas del archipiélago indonesio. Las largas y mecánicas paredes se pelan a lo largo de un arrecife poco profundo, ofreciendo a los surfistas de nivel intermedio un lienzo perfecto para encadenar maniobras en una ola que puede extenderse varios cientos de metros. Aguanta una amplia variedad de tamaños de swell: es divertida en días pequeños y se vuelve verdaderamente impresionante cuando entra un sólido swell del sur. La atmósfera remota y de fin del mundo de Nembrala solo añade a su estatus legendario.
Local knowledge
El arrecife bajo T-Land es poco profundo, afilado y está vivo: una caída en la sección equivocada con marea baja puede causar daños graves, y los erizos de mar acechan en las grietas. Una fuerte corriente lateral recorre el arrecife con swells grandes y puede arrastrarte hacia el canal o más allá de la zona de take-off más rápido de lo esperado; evalúa siempre la corriente antes de remar hacia afuera. Las multitudes han crecido considerablemente a medida que se ha extendido la reputación de Nembrala, y los lineups en temporada alta pueden ser muy competitivos.
El pueblo de Nembrala es la base: desde la hilera principal de warungs y losmen frente a la playa, hay un corto paseo por la arena hasta la entrada al canal en el lado derecho (este) del break. Rema hacia afuera por el canal, manteniéndote bien alejado de la ola rompiente, y luego avanza por el arrecife hasta la zona de take-off. La mayoría de los surfistas se aloja en el propio Nembrala, por lo que no hay problemas de aparcamiento; sal de vuelta por el mismo canal y vigila la corriente en el regreso. Los botes también pueden llevarte desde la playa si el swell complica la entrada por el canal.
Una shortboard versátil (6'2"–6'6") cubre la mayoría de las condiciones y te permite trabajar al máximo las largas y abiertas paredes de T-Land; en días pequeños y limpios, una fish o un mid-length sacará más velocidad en las secciones más suaves. Cuando llegue un sólido swell del sur y la ola empiece a ganar altura con fuerza en la sección interior, opta por una step-up: la potencia extra de remada y el agarre marcan una diferencia real.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.

Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.
🌤️Climate & season
Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
