About Pero

Pero is a consistent reef break on Sumba's southwest coast, offering well-shaped right-handers that reward surfers with solid fundamentals. The wave has a friendly enough takeoff but can punch up when swell fills in, giving intermediates plenty of room to progress. The remote setting keeps crowds thin, making for a relaxed session in an unspoiled environment. A great all-rounder for those looking to step up their game in Sumba.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide, with live coral that can inflict serious lacerations on a wipeout — booties are strongly recommended. A persistent lateral current runs along the reef on bigger swells, making it easy to drift wide of the channel; paddle back in early. Sea urchins lurk in the shallower inside sections, so take your time picking your way in and out.

Getting there

Pero is reached via a long overland drive on rough roads from Tambolaka or Waitabula — a 4WD or scooter is essential, and locals in the nearby village of Pero can point you to the cliff-top pull-off. Paddle out through the sandy channel on the north side of the reef, which doubles as your safest exit; the village warung by the beach track is a reliable landmark and a good spot to ask about the day's conditions.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the bulk of Sumba's swell range here, but bring a fish or a round-tail fun shape for the smaller, mushier days that can roll through in the shoulder season. If a solid groundswell is forecast (overhead-plus), a step-up with a bit more volume will help you match the wave's speed off the takeoff.

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba

Full Sumba surf guide →

Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.

✈️Getting there

Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.

🛵Getting around

Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
