About Peanuts
Peanuts is a fun, accessible reef break on Rote that offers consistent, playful waves well-suited to intermediate surfers looking to progress. The wave tends to be forgiving enough to experiment on, with decent shape across a range of swell sizes. It can get busy when conditions are good, but there's usually something on offer. A great spot to build confidence on Rote's trademark trade-wind swells.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide — sharp coral and sea urchins make wipeouts and bad exits punishing, so booties are worth considering. A moderate channel rip runs alongside the break and can catch unfamiliar surfers off guard; use it to paddle out but respect its pull. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and surf charters increases around peak swell days, so stay alert in the lineup.
Peanuts is reached via boat transfer from Nembrala, the main surf hub on Rote's south coast — no direct shore access to the break. Arrange a short boat ride through your guesthouse or one of the warungs along the Nembrala beachfront; the trip takes around 5–10 minutes. Entry is straightforward from the boat into the channel; exit the same way, timing your return to the boat between sets.
A versatile shortboard or a fun-shape in the 6'4"–7'0" range covers most conditions here and suits the wave's playful, intermediate-friendly character. On smaller days bring a fish or mid-length to generate speed; when a solid trade-wind swell fills in, step up to a rounded-pin shortboard with a bit more volume for confidence on the steeper sections.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.

Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.

Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
