About Bawa
Bawa es un reef break de derechas de clase mundial situado frente a una pequeña isla al norte de Nias, ampliamente considerado como uno de los barrels más pesados y perfectos de la región. Con un swell grande produce tubos largos y contundentes que rompen sobre un arrecife muy poco profundo, lo que lo convierte en un terreno de juego exclusivo para surfistas avanzados. La ola exige un take-off valiente y la capacidad de mantener una línea alta dentro de un barrel grueso y que lanza con fuerza. El acceso en barco y una sincronización precisa son imprescindibles — cuando está en condiciones, Bawa se cuenta entre las mejores olas de toda Indonesia.
Local knowledge
El arrecife de Bawa es brutalmente poco profundo y afilado — una caída a plena potencia puede arrastrarte por coral vivo en menos de treinta centímetros de agua, y las laceraciones son la norma más que la excepción. Una fuerte corriente de succión recorre el borde del arrecife; si te pilla dentro durante un set de limpieza, regresar al canal requiere calma y una palada potente. Los erizos de mar son abundantes en la plataforma del arrecife, por lo que se recomienda encarecidamente el uso de escarpines — pisa o cae en la sección equivocada y pasarás días quitándote púas.
El acceso a Bawa es exclusivamente en barco — alquila una lancha rápida o únete a un barco charter de surf desde Lagundri Bay (aproximadamente 1,5–2 horas al norte) o desde el pequeño puerto cercano a Sirombu, en la costa oeste de Nias. No hay forma de llegar caminando por la playa ni paladeando desde la orilla; la entrada por el canal se hace motorizando hasta el arrecife y deslizándose desde el barco al agua más profunda del hombro sur del break. Calcula bien el momento del recogida — lo más fácil es hacerlo en el canal durante una pausa entre series, ya que el tráfico de embarcaciones y los surfistas compartiendo un lineup pequeño pueden generar confusión durante los sets.
Con un swell medio (4–6 pies), un shortboard de performance de entre 6'2" y 6'6" con el tail cerrado y un rocker pronunciado gestionará bien el take-off pronunciado y con labio. Cuando Bawa sube a 6 pies o más, trae una step-up o semi-gun (6'6"–7'2") — el drop se convierte en un compromiso serio y necesitas el control y la velocidad necesarios para hacer la sección del barrel sin caer en caída libre.

Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.

Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
