About Oetune
Oetune ist ein schöner Beach Break an der Südküste von Timor, umgeben von sanften Sanddünen in einer abgelegenen und visuell beeindruckenden Umgebung. Die Welle ist nachsichtig und macht Spaß, was sie ideal für fortgeschrittene Surfer macht, die eine entspannte Session in einer außergewöhnlichen Umgebung suchen. Die sich verschiebenden Sandbänke sorgen dafür, dass der Break von Tag zu Tag variieren kann, was jeden Besuch frisch hält.
Local knowledge
Starke und unberechenbare Strömungen sind hier die größte Gefahr – der abgelegene Strand und die sich verschiebenden Sandbänke können starke Rips erzeugen, also beobachte das Wasser sorgfältig, bevor du hinaus paddelst. Flache Sandbank-Abschnitte können dich bei größeren Swells überraschen, und die nächste medizinische Hilfe ist eine lange Autofahrt entfernt in Soe oder Kupang, also surfe nicht allein. Manchmal sind Quallen vorhanden, und onshore Winde können unordentliche, schwer lesbare Bedingungen schaffen.
Oetune liegt etwa 100 km südwestlich von Kupang – nimm die Hauptstraße in Richtung Soe und folge dann den Schildern nach Süden zum Dorf Oetune; der letzte Abschnitt ist ein rauer Schotterweg, der am besten mit dem Motorrad oder 4WD befahren wird. Parke in der Nähe des Dünenrandes und gehe ein kurzes Stück durch die Sanddünen direkt zum Strand; paddle durch den Rip-Kanal hinaus, um den Shorebreak zu vermeiden. Es gibt vor Ort minimale Einrichtungen, also besorge dir Wasser und Essen in der nächstgelegenen Stadt, bevor du losfährst.
Ein vielseitiges Shortboard oder eine Fun-Shape (7'0"–7'6") bewältigt die alltäglichen Beach Break Peaks gut und gibt dir genug Auftrieb für die kleineren, matschigen Tage, die Oetune oft bietet. Bring ein Fish oder Hybrid für die häufigen kleineren, peeling Swells mit – ein Step-Up ist selten notwendig, es sei denn, ein solider Süd-Swell kommt durch.

For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.
✈️Getting there
The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.
🛵Getting around
On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.
🌤️Climate & season
Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
