Wenn ein großer Süd-Swell ankommt, entfesselt das äußere Riff dicke, schnelle Röhren, die Erfahrung, Engagement und solides Big-Wave-Urteilsvermögen erfordern. Flaches Wasser und starke Strömungen machen Stürze folgenschwer, daher sollten nur selbstbewusste fortgeschrittene Surfer hinaus paddeln. Die Belohnung für diejenigen, die es sich verdienen, ist eine weltklasse, unüberfüllte Welle in einer abgelegenen und schönen Umgebung.
Local knowledge
Das äußere Riff ist bei Ebbe extrem flach – ein schwerer Sturz oder Halten kann dich auf lebende Korallen treiben, die die exponierte Haut aufschneiden. Starke, unberechenbare Strömungen verlaufen entlang des Riffrandes und können dich schnell weit vom Kanal wegziehen; kenne deinen Ausstieg, bevor du hinaus paddelst. Bei größeren Swells sind zwei-Wellen-Halte eine reale Möglichkeit, und die Entfernung vom Ufer bedeutet, dass Hilfe langsam kommt, wenn etwas schiefgeht.
Lass dich in einem der kleinen Gästehäuser oder Warungs rund um die Ekas Bay nieder – die meisten Betreiber in der Bucht bieten Bootstransfers direkt zum äußeren Riff an, was bei weitem die sicherste und praktischste Option ist (erwarte eine kurze Fahrt von 5–10 Minuten). Es ist möglich, vom Strand aus über den Kanal auf der Südseite des Riffs hinaus zu paddeln, aber die Entfernung und die Strömung machen die Bootoption dringend empfohlen, insbesondere an größeren Tagen; vereinbare eine Abholzeit mit deinem Skipper und ein Signal, falls du frühzeitig abgeholt werden musst.
Lass dein alltägliches Shortboard zu Hause – ein Step-Up oder Semi-Gun im Bereich von 6'4"–7'2" ist die erste Wahl für die kraftvollen, schnell brechenden Barrels hier. Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
